Yellow Water
This was a very special day.
The trip from Jabiru to Cooinda was pretty ho-hum but after a night at Cooinda Caravan Park (huge, restaurant, pool, bar and bistro) we boarded a boat at 6.45 am and set off on an amazing 3 hour cruise of “Yellow Water” Billabong, the massive flood plains of the area.
The Yellow Water Dawn Cruise gave us the opportunity to watch the wetland life unfold and learn more about the local culture and traditions. This is Kakadu’s most famous wetland on the end of a tributary of the South Alligator River. The river system contains extensive wetlands that include river channels, flood plains and backwater swamps. We saw heaps of birds up close including white bellied sea eagles, jabiru, rainbow bee eaters and the amazing Jesus birds who appear to be walking on water bait in fact trot across the surface of lily pads and water weeds. Whistling ducks, magpie geese, and dancing brolgas. Water buffalo up close, wild pigs in the distance, crocs galore up close. The sun coming up. A fabulous morning!
Finished off with a full buffet /breakfast waiting for us as we arrived back at camp
After a 250 km drive we ended up in Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) N P . (Next post)
The Katherine region is nearly 350,000 sq km (the same as the state of Victoria)
I’m putting photos in a separate post from now on because of difficulties with my iPad not scrolling down when editing posts with several photos. It’s an Apple problem I’ve found out so I will be changing the Blog provider for the next trip.
